Devost steps down
CALGARY, ALTA., (April 9, 2019) - Brent Devost has resigned his position as head coach of the SAIT Trojans men's hockey team after just one season with the program.
He cited growing commitments outside of the rink as to why he will step down in what was an unexpected announcement made on Tuesday.
"It's really tough to know that, on a daily basis, I will not be at the rink with the guys and my fellow coaches, or in the office at SAIT with the people that welcomed me in from Day 1," said Devost. "You can't help but feel you're letting people down, but it was the right decision for me."
Devost's Trojans finished the 2018/19 regular season with a 17-10-1 record, and came within just one game of reaching SAIT's first championship final since 2015.
Their season came to a close after losing in a deciding Game 3 of their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) semifinal to the NAIT Ooks.
"While we are saddened by Coach Devost's decision, we certainly appreciate him being honest with us about his ability to dedicate the necessary time to build a championship-winning team going forward," said Wade Kolmel, Athletics and Recreation Director at SAIT. "We thank Brent for his time with us, but will now turn our focus to the search for the next head coach of our SAIT Trojans men's hockey program."
Devost will stay on with the team in an advisory role until a new head coach has been selected.
