Smith nets 30 as Trojans edge Kodiaks
LETHBRIDGE, ALTA., (Jan. 18, 2019) — In a scrambly-at-times games, the SAIT Trojans men's basketball team found a way.
The Trojans led by as much as 17 at one point, but ended up with a narrow 101-95 decision over the host Lethbridge College Kodiaks in their Friday night Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest.
"It was kind of all over the place," said Trojans head coach, Marty Birky, whose tea is ranked No. 1 in Canada by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). "We looked good at times, and bad at others. A lot of adjustments had to be made, and Lethbridge is a team that makes you do that."
The Birky-led Trojans move to 13-0 on the season. Lethbridge College falls to 8-5.
John Smith (4th year, Lacey, Wash., Business Administration) led all scorers with 30 points – including going 6-for-11 from behind the three-point line.
Teammate Ian Tevis (5th year, Kent, Wash., Office Professional) struggled with his shot, but still managed 16 points to go along with an impressive nine rebounds and seven assists.
Orin Porter Jr. led the Kodiaks with 23 points.
Friday's game is the only one SAIT will play this weekend, as they return to the court next Friday and Saturday in a home-and-home series against the Olds College Broncos.
