Tevis, Smith lead Trojans march over Lightning
CALGARY, (Feb. 2, 2019) — The 1-2 punch for the SAIT Trojans men's basketball team hit hard Saturday night.
Ian Tevis (5th year, Kent, Wash., Office Professional) scored 30 points, while teammate John Smith (4th year, Lacey, Wash., Business Administration) added 28, as the Trojans rolled to a 109-91 victory over the host St. Mary's University Lightning in their all-Calgary Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) battle.
"Those two are amongst the top players in the league, and teams have to adjust to them," said Trojans head coach Marty Birky. "As nice as it is to have them going, you can't just focus on them because we have other guys who can step up and lead us as well. Tonight, it was them; another night it could be someone else."
SAIT moves to 16-1 on the season with the sweep-clinching victory. St. Mary's falls to 5-13.
Johnpaul Okodua led the Lightning with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
The Trojans play just once next weekend, as they head to Ambrose University on Friday night in yet another all-Calgary matchup. Tip-off is set for 8pm.
"I think Ambrose just clinched a playoff spot, so we have to prepare for them as if it was playoff time because we might meet them down the road," Birky said. "That's good for us to be able to play games that matter as we try sharpen up for playoffs."
