Trojans tame Lions
CALGARY, ALTA., (Feb. 8, 2019) — SAIT Trojans men's basketball coach Marty Birky liked what he saw Friday night.
He watched on as his team rolled to a 93-78 victory over the host Ambrose Lions in an all-Calgary Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) battle.
"I thought we had a better defensive energy than we've had in a while," he said. "That was our focus this past week, and it showed. There's still some holes, but overall, I was pretty happy with tonight."
SAIT's win moves their ACAC South Division-leading record to 17-1, while Ambrose falls to 12-7.
The tandem of Ian Tevis (5th year, Kent, Wash., Office Professional) and John Smith (4th year, Lacey, Wash., Business Administration) did their thing, scoring 23 and 22 points, respectively.
Adding to the mix was bench player Enoque Michel (1st year, Montreal, Que., Graphic Communications and Print Technology). The first-year guard seems to score well in bunches, netting 15 points in just 12 minutes of work.
"We have some good rookies who have a good future," Birky said of Michel. "We've said all year that we have the best bench in the league, so it's nice when they make a difference."
Riley Cordwell led the Lions with 14 points.
The Trojans will return to action next weekend in a tough home-and-home series with the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.
