Trojans split in all-Calgary contests
CALGARY, ALTA., (Jan. 17, 2020) - Gemie Muya scored with 0.9 seconds left to lift the SAIT Trojans men's basketball team to victory on Friday night.
Rust may have been to blame, as the Trojans escaped with a narrow 79-78 win over the host St. Mary's University Lightning Friday night in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) action played at Glenmore Christian Academy.
"It looked like it was the first game of the semester. Both teams did not execute well. It was sloppy," said Trojans head coach Marty Birky. "We turned the ball over and over again, but our guys made plays when we had to. These are the kind of games that make you better."
SAIT moves to 8-3 on the season. St. Mary's falls to 5-7.
Charlie Conner (3rd year, Lacey, Wash., Business Administration) led the Trojans with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
Ryan Morck led the Lightning with 25 points.
The teams will finish their weekend set Saturday night at SAIT at 8pm.
On the women's side, the Trojans could not find victory in their first time out in 2020.
In an all-Calgary Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) battle Friday night, the Trojans were beaten by the St. Mary's University Lightning 76-43.
"We gave their two scoring threats the opportunity to score, and they did just that and put up 20+ points," said Trojans head coach Bir Parmar. "Those are two things we knew coming in. We have to be better at stopping the threats we know."
SAIT falls to 3-8 on the year. St. Mary's jumps to 7-5.
Anegor Wol (2nd year, Edmonton, Alta., Journalism) led the Trojans with 13 points.
Lightning forward Emily Wagner led all scorers with 25 points.
The Trojans and Lightning will finish their weekend set Saturday night at SAIT at 6pm.
