Krienke scores four in win over Clippers
CALGARY, ALTA., (Nov. 3, 2018) — Eric Krienke helped his SAIT Trojans men's hockey team in their attempt to salvage the weekend.
Less than 24 hours after a disappointing loss to the Briercrest College Clippers, he scored four times in his team's 6-2 win over the same team Saturday afternoon in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played at SAIT Arena.
"Last night was unacceptable, and everybody knows that," said Krienke (2nd year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) about their 3-1 loss on Friday. "It was a good challenge for us to step up and see how we were going to bounce back. That's the best part of back-to-backs – if you mess up the first night, you have the second to try make amends."
SAIT improves to 6-2 on the season. Briercrest falls to 2-6.
The Trojans did come out like a team with something to prove, as they dominated the first 90 seconds of the game. However, it would be the Clippers who struck first when Austin Kozluk beat Trojans goalie Jordan Cartney (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration) just 1:52 into the game.
Krienke brought the teams even six minutes later on the first of the night, beating Clippers goalie Dan Dekoning.
The 6-foot-4 forward now has eight goals in eight games played this season.
"My linemates are guys I am comfortable with, and we were moving the puck well tonight," said Krienke about his success on Saturday. "It was up to me to find the right areas. I got a couple of lucky bounces too, but it was good."
One of those linemates, Parker Evans-Campbell (3rd year, High River, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration), assisted on three of Krienke's markers.
Briercrest regained the lead late in the opening frame when Josh Boelema pounced on a loose puck on the backdoor to make it 2-1.
From there, Cartney shut the door, stopping 17 combined second and third period shots from the visitors.
SAIT, on the other hand, was just getting going.
Krienke's second of the game came just 36 seconds into the second. Sixteen minutes later, his hat trick completing marker gave the Trojans their first lead of the game.
In the third period, Krienke's fourth of the night was sandwiched between goals by teammates Kevin Massy (3rd year, Victoria, BC, Business Administration) and Zach McNeill (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration).
"We have to learn from Friday. Like coach (Brent Devost) said, we need to start on time, and that's been our issue," Krienke explained. "Even tonight we got behind the 8-ball, but we this time we were able to recover."
SAIT returns to action next weekend when they take on the NAIT Ooks — Friday night in Edmonton, Saturday night back at SAIT Arena.
