Trojans shake Friday night blues
CAMROSE, ALTA., (Nov. 23, 2018) — For three straight weekends, the SAIT Trojans men's hockey team lost on Friday nights, and won on Saturday. Consider that streak broken.
The Trojans opened their weekend set with the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings with a 6-2 win in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) action played in Camrose, Alta.
"Right off the bat, (Augustana) came out flying," said Trojans head coach, Brent Devost. "We were on our heels, but we weathered the storm and finished the first with a 1-0 lead. That gave us a lot of momentum for the rest of the game."
SAIT moves to 9-4 on the year. The Vikings fall to 8-5.
"When we finally shook some of the bus legs off, we played what I would consider our best hockey all season," Devost added. "We started to play with our structure and establish our forecheck, that resulted in some goals."
SAIT's Parker Evans-Campbell (3rd year, High River, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration) scored in the first period to give his team a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Matt Houston (2nd year, Rosetown, Sask., Business Administration), Rock Ruschkowski (1st year, Calgary, Respiratory Therapy) and Estian Coetzee (1st year, Fort McMurray, Alta., Academic Upgrading) scored in the second to end the frame with a 4-2 lead.
Owen LaClare (2nd year, Edam, Sask., Power and Process Operations) and Erik Pedersen (3rd year, Airdrie, Alta., Business Administration) added insurance markers in the third.
Trojans netminder Payton Lee (2nd year, Cranbrook, BC, Power and Process Operations) turned aside 23 shots in the win.
SAIT will attempt the sweep at home on Saturday night when the teams meet at the Campus Centre at 7pm.
