Trojans unload on Voyageurs
CALGARY, ALTA., (Jan. 11, 2019) — The SAIT Trojans men's hockey team asked Santa Claus for some goals, and he came through bigtime.
The Trojans returned from their holiday break on Friday night, and filled the net to the tune of an 8-2 decision over the Portage College Voyageurs in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest played at SAIT Arena.
"We started off hard, and everything kind of went our way," said Trojans forward Owen LaClare (2nd year, Edam, Sask., Power and Process Operations). "We had a good week of practice leading up to tonight, which helped out a lot."
SAIT sees their ACAC record move to 10-5. Portage falls to 2-11-1.
Despite the lopsided score, it was the Voyageurs who started the scoring when former Trojan Trevor Posch beat SAIT goalie Jordan Cartney (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration) just over five minutes into the game.
SAIT responded with a pair of goals from captain Dean Allison (4th year, Surrey, BC, Bachelor of Business Administration) to lead 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.
Portage evened the score exactly eight minutes into the middle frame when Jacob Vance beat Cartney. However, that would be the last time Cartney had to look behind him, as he shut the door the rest of the way, finishing with 24 saves to earn his fourth win of the season.
While their goalie was busy keeping the puck out, the Trojans were putting it in on the other side of the ice. They scored six unanswered goals the rest of the way to send the Trojans crowd home happy.
"Even when we were tied, I don't think there were any doubts," LaClated stated. "Everyone was relaxed and we were playing a good, defensive game. We were just waiting for them to break down, and once they did we put the puck in the net."
Matty Houston (2nd year, Rosthern, Sask., Business Administration) scored two, while solo markers were added by Jackson McKinstry (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration), John Flatters (3rd year, Calgary, RTBN), Colton McCarthy (3rd year, Salmon Arm, BC, Geographic Information Systems and Will Gretton (1st year, Calgary, RTBN).
LaClare added three assists to give him an impressive 10 points (all assists) in just three games against the Voyageurs this season.
"Honestly, it's just about playing the game the right way and I have been lucky enough to put up some points against these guys this year," he said. "I have a few good linemates who are putting the puck in the net, too, so things are coming together nicely."
The teams will wrap up their weekend set tomorrow afternoon at 2pm at SAIT Arena.
