Trojans use three-goal third period to beat Thunder
EDMONTON, ALTA., (Jan. 19, 2019) — The SAIT Trojans men's hockey team stayed calm, and it resulted in two points being put in the bank account.
The Trojans gave up two goals seconds apart late in the second period to go into the final frame tied, but did not panic, as they pulled away to secure a 7-4 win over the host Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) action played in the province's capital.
"Just stay the course and stick to the plan," said Brent Devost, head coach of the Trojans, when asked about his speech during the second intermission. "I was really proud of the guys tonight. . . They came out in the third very motivated, stuck to what we wanted them to do, and when they executed it, their offensive abilities took over."
SAIT moves to 13-5 on the season. Concordia fell to 3-12-1-1.
The Trojans spread the love around, as they had seven different goal scorers – Connor McCallum (3rd year, Strathmore, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration), Zach McNeill (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration), Colton McCarthy (3rd year, Salmon Arm, BC., Geographic Information Systems), Dean Allison (4th year, Surrey, BC., Bachelor of Business Administration), Joren Patenaude (1st year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration), Parker Evans-Campbell (3rd year, High River, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration) and Eric Krienke (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration).
Seeing the variety of numbers on the scoresheet made Devost smile – especially when he saw that goalie Payton Lee (2nd year, Cranbrook, BC., Power and Process Operation) was credited with a pair of assists.
"The boys bonded together and battled together," he said. "Everybody came out and contributed. It was a big team win."
The Trojans will return to action next weekend when they take on the MacEwan University Griffins in a home-and-home set – Friday night at home, Saturday night in Edmonton.
