Power leads Trojans to OT win
CALGARY, ALTA., (Oct. 25, 2019) - Jared Power finished what he started.
The first-year forward scored his team's first goal of the game, and then added the overtime winner, as his SAIT Trojans men's hockey team beat the visiting Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder 3-2 in their Friday night Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played inside SAIT Arena.
It's the third time in five skates this season that SAIT has gone to the extra period.
"I think we just like giving the fans a show to keep them coming back every weekend," laughed Power (1st year, Calgary, Academic Upgrading). "I think that just speaks to the resiliency of this team. We can kind of lose focus at times during the game, but then find it when we need to."
SAIT moves to 2-1-1-1 on the season. The Thunder fall to 2-2-1.
The Trojans got things going early on as Power scored the only goal of the first period to put his team up one after 20 minutes of play.
Concordia responded in the second when Rory Davidson beat Trojans netminder Kyle Dumba (1st year, Calgary, Business Administration) to tie the game after 40 minutes of play.
In the third, both teams had their chances to go ahead, but it was the Thunder who did it with 5:36 remaining in the period thanks to Peter Tomaras, who spun in the slot and fired the puck past Dumba.
With the clock ticking, SAIT pushed and pushed for the equalizer.
Eventually it came when Cory Santoro (3rd year, Kelowna, BC, Bachelor of Business Administration) scored with 1:52 left on the scoreclock, beating Thunder goalie Tanner McCorriston.
In the overtime period, the teams went down to four-on-four, and it didn't take long for SAIT to end it.
Just 63 seconds into the extra period, Power released early on the play, allowing defenceman Sam Stormoen (2nd year, Calgary, Petroleum Engineering Technology) to find him wide open for a breakaway pass.
"I kind of cheated a little bit, so I might have got caught had the puck didn't get to me," explained Power, whose four goals now leads the Trojans. "(McCorriston) bit on the first fake and then I just went five-hole."
Dumba stopped 33 shots to earn the win.
The teams will wrap up their home-and-home series Saturday night back in Edmonton in a 7pm puck drop.
