Trojans clip Briercrest to cap off four-point weekend
CARONPORT, SASK., (Jan. 18, 2020) - The SAIT Trojans men's hockey team is coming home four points richer.
On Saturday afternoon, the Trojans defeated the host Briercrest College Clippers 8-2 in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest played in Caronport, Sask. The win comes less than 24 hours after SAIT earned an 8-3 victory on Friday night.
"The guys worked hard, we got some contribution from different guys and our special teams play was good," said Trojans head coach Tyler Drader. "It's nice to come away with two wins."
SAIT improves their ACAC record to 9-6-1-2. Briercrest falls to 3-12-2-1.
Joren Patenaude (2nd year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration), Parker Evans-Campbell (4th year, High River, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration) and Colton McCarthy (4th year, Salmon Arm, BC, Geographic Information Systems) each scored a pair up goals for SAIT.
Evans-Campbell now has four goals in his last two games, Patenaude four in his past three.
Also finding the back of the for SAIT on the afternoon was Kevin Massy (4th year, Vernon, BC, Bachelor of Business Administration) and Jared Power (1st year, Calgary, Business Administration).
Massy's goal ended a 15-game goalless streak for the veteran blueliner, which prompted a 'monkey-off-the-back' gesture as he celebrated with teammates. Coincidentally, his last goal came against Briercrest when the teams met at SAIT on Oct. 18.
"He has very high standards for himself, and he's been playing very well. To see him get rewarded today on a toe drag, top corner goal was great," Drader said. "It was a high-skilled play that only a few guys can make."
Josh Boelema and Chad Davidson replied for the Clippers in the loss.
SAIT goalie Kyle Dumba (1st year, Calgary, Business Administration) was named his team's Player of the Game after stopping 33 shots in the win.
The Trojans resume their ACAC schedule next weekend with a home-and-home series against the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder - Friday night at home, Saturday night back in Edmonton.
"The guys are feeling good, but next weekend is going to be a tough test," stated Drader, whose team has won three of four to start the new year. "We want to try create some separation in the standings, but Concordia is a good team. It should be a good battle."
