Trojans topple Rustlers
LLOYDMINSTER, ALTA., (Oct. 14, 2018) — Good or bad, the SAIT Trojans men's soccer team came away with three points.
Head coach Connor Brady was not in a boastful mood Sunday afternoon following his team's 2-1 win over the Lakeland College Rustlers in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played in the Border City.
"We can be better, and we should be better," he said. "We had a bit of a slow start, and they came out on fire on their home field and worked really hard. . . They did a good job of playing out of their own end and made things difficult for us."
SAIT improves to 9-0 on the season. Lakeland falls to 1-6-3.
Lakeland got on the board first in the 22nd minute when MacKenzie Longpre beat Trojans goalkeeper Marko Ilich (2nd year, Calgary, Information Technology Network Systems).
Ilich shut the door the rest of the day, stopping five other shots on net by the Rustlers.
"Marko made some great saves to keep us in the game," Brady stated. "He really gave us a chance to go and win today."
Less than two minutes later, SAIT tied the game when Brad Atherton (1st year, Calgary, Business Administration) scored his fourth of the season.
The score remained tied in the second half until Trojans midfielder Dean Northover (3rd year, Calgary, Graphic Communications and Print Technology) scored on a penalty kick.
Northover's seventh of the year proved to be the game-winner.
The Trojans will not have much rest before getting back at it Tuesday night at Rundle College against the host Ambrose University Lions in a game that was postponed due to weather two weeks ago. Game time is set for 8pm.
Brady said his team's depth will help them with the quick turnaround.
"It's a luxury for us to have the deep bench that we do where we feel any one can step on the field and contribute," he said. "We'll spread the playing time around this week to help us get through it."
