Trojans beat Kings, but Brady wants better
CALGARY, ALTA., (Sept. 16, 2018) — The SAIT Trojans men’s soccer team moved to 4-0 on the season, but head coach Connor Brady was disappointed in his team’s start on Sunday.
After a scoreless first half, the Trojans scored four in the second half as they beat the Red Deer College Kings 4-0 in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest played at SAIT’s Cohos Commons Field.
“To be honest, I think we were poor in the first half,” Brady said following the game. “We came out slow, we came out sluggish. Our press wasn’t working for us, our work ethic off the ball wasn’t there for us. . . At halftime, we were able to sort it out. When we work hard, things tend to go our way a little more.”
With the loss, the Kings fell to 1-1-1.
SAIT broke the scoreless tie just under 20 minutes into the second half when Armando Garcia (2nd year, Edmonton, Alta., Graphic Communication and Print Design) scored his second of the season.
The goal not only served as the game-winning marker, but also loosened up his team.
“We struggle a bit with confidence and I don’t know why that is,” Brady explained. “Once we get one goal, we start to relax and play the way we can, and that’s what happened after Armando’s goal. But, we need to be able to play like that for a full 90 minutes.”
SAIT doubled, and then quickly tripled their lead when an own goal for Red Deer (credited to SAIT’s Johnny Hutchinson) and Garcia’s second of the game came just 78 seconds apart at the 70-minute mark.
Bernardo Rojas (3rd year, Grande Prairie, Alta., Electrical Apprentice) added a late marker in the 89th minute to seal the victory.
After back-to-back two-game weekends to start the year, the Trojans will play just once next weekend, Sunday afternoon at 2pm against the Olds College Broncos.
