Northover leads Trojans past Rattlers
CALGARY, ALTA., (Sept. 9, 2018) - The SAIT Trojans men's soccer team used two second-half goals to garner victory Sunday afternoon in their home opener at Cohos Commons Field.
Dean Northover and Joseph Lambele each scored, as the Trojans shut out the Medicine Hat College Rattlers 2-0 in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest played at SAIT.
"I felt like our leaders really stepped up today," said Trojans head coach, Connor Brady. "We were composed, we stayed patient in our attack. . . We didn't force things and we stayed calm. Overall, I felt like we did a great job playing our game for 90-plus minutes."
The Trojans move to 2-0 with the victory, while the Rattlers fall to 1-1.
Despite having their fair share of chances in the opening 45 minutes of play, the Trojans were kept off the scoresheet.
That changed just two minutes into the second half when Northover scored his first of the campaign to put the home side up 1-0.
Northover then helped set up SAIT's second and final marker 30 minutes later with a beautiful pass to Lambele, who was left all alone in front to direct it into the net.
SAIT keeper David Miguez earned the shutout win after not seeing a lot of action, as the Trojans controlled possession for the majority of the game.
Northover was named Player of the Game for the Trojans, while Rattlers goalkeeper Joao Batista earned the honour for his team after making key saves for his team in the opening half.
The Trojans will return to the pitch next weekend with a pair of home games - Saturday against Lakeland College and Sunday against Red Deer College. Both games will start at 2pm.
"I think we're going to ride the momentum of this six-point weekend into next weekend," Northover stated. "It was fun to play in front of our home crowd today, and we'll get to do that twice next Saturday and Sunday."
