Trojans split Friday night games at Ambrose
CALGARY, ALTA., (Nov. 9, 2018) — It might have taken them longer to do it than they would have wanted, but the SAIT Trojans men's volleyball team got the job done.
Playing in front of a rowdy crowd at Ambrose University, the Trojans beat the host Lions 3-1 (28-26, 25-17, 25-27, 25-15) in their Friday night Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) all-Calgary contest.
"We changed our passing a bit from the last few weeks, and we saw an improvement," said Trojans head coach Sean McKay. "We were a little heavy on the missed serves, which kept sets closer than they needed to be."
The Trojans move to 4-4 on the season. Ambrose falls to 2-6.
Jarrett Noel (2nd year, Calgary, Geographic Information Systems) continues to shine in his first year at SAIT, recording a game-high 18 kills to go along with 16 digs.
Harrison Rosewarn led the Lions with eight kills and seven digs.
The Trojans will now get the rest of the weekend off before picking things up again next weekend against Olds College in a home-and-home series.
Despite having a bye last weekend, McKay is happy for the one-and-done weekend this time around.
"We had a good weekend off, but it's good to get a little more rest considering mid-terms are starting to pick up," he said.
Trojan women fall in five
After winning two of their last three games in five sets, the magic wasn't there on Friday night for the SAIT Trojans women's volleyball team.
In a battle of two 5-2 teams, the Ambrose Lions came out on top, beating the Trojans 3-2 (25-15, 26-28, 22-25, 25-18, 15-12) in their Friday night Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) affair hosted by Ambrose.
"Our first contact was not as good as it needed to be tonight," said Trojans head coach, Art O'Dwyer. "On top of that, we were too predictable in the last two sets. The whole gym knew where we were going with the ball, so that hurt us."
The Trojans fall to 5-3 on the year. Ambrose improves to 6-2.
SAIT led the match 2-1 at one point, but could not do not enough to close out the match.
"We had some communication errors late in the game, and that's not like us," O'Dwyer added. "Ambrose defended the ball well, so we weren't getting any free points out of them. We just didn't out battle them."
Jadyn Leong (2nd year, Calgary, Emergency Medical Technician) led the Trojans with 13 kills and 16 digs, while setter Elly Prince (3rd year, Calgary, Legal Assistant added 35 assists, 17 digs and four service aces.
Madeline Williscroft paced the Lions with 14 kills.
That's it for the weekend for the Trojans, who will return to action next weekend with a pair of games against the Olds College Broncos – Friday night in Olds, Saturday night at SAIT.
