Trojans dump Broncos in four
OLDS, ALTA., (Nov. 15, 2018) — There was some good. There was some bad. But in the end, the SAIT Trojans men's volleyball team came out on top.
Playing in a rare Thursday night Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game, the Trojans defeated the host Olds College Broncos 3-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-14, 25-20).
SAIT moves to 5-4 on the year. Olds College falls to 0-9.
"We were able to get some guys into the game tonight that maybe have not seen as much time as others, and I think they came in a little bit nervous," said Trojans head coach, Sean McKay. "But, they have been working hard and playing well in practice, so they deserved an opportunity tonight."
After earning a first-set victory, the new lineup got a bit of a wakeup call in the second set when Olds jumped out to a 20-10 lead. The Broncos finished off the set with a 25-16 win.
McKay credited veteran Tyler Latu'ila (4th year, Auckland, New Zealand, Bachelor of Business Administration) with helping right the ship the final two sets.
Latu'ila finished the game with 18 kills and 16 digs.
"He did a great job of anchoring us down offensively," McKay said.
Riley Grusing (2nd year, Calgary, Civil Engineering Technology) also recorded 18 kills to go along with 13 digs and two blocks.
Thundersky Walkingbear had a big game for the Broncos, posting 16 kills.
The teams will meet again Friday night at SAIT at 8pm to wrap up their weekend set.
