Trojans fail in bid to hand Kodiaks their first loss
CALGARY, ALTA., (Jan. 18, 2019) — The SAIT Trojans men's volleyball team started well, but ran out of a gas.
After dominating the first set, the Trojans dropped the next three, as they fell to the undefeated Lethbridge College Kodiaks 3-1 (17-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-14) in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played inside SAIT's Campus Centre.
"Lethbridge is a team that extends rallies and has a ton of energy. I think our guys felt compelled to match that, and that's not what you need to do," said a disheartened Trojans head coach Sean McKay. "We lost sight of what we do to win."
SAIT falls to 12-5 and sit in third place in the ACAC's South Division standings. Lethbridge sits atop the table at 15-0.
"Our guys should see that we are able to beat any team, including this one," McKay added. "And if we don't, it's a mental thing where we're not performing the way we need to."
The visitors looked half asleep in the opening set, and the Trojans took advantage of it.
The loss in Set 1 certainly woke up the Kodiaks, as they collected themselves and started putting away ball after ball and owned the next three sets.
Jarett Noel (2nd year, Geographic Information Systems) led the Trojans with 12 kills and five blocks.
Carter Hansen had an impressive game for the Kodiaks, recording 19 kills and nine digs.
McKay's team will get another crack at Lethbridge tomorrow night, when the teams finish up their weekend set in their gym at 8pm.
