SAIT secures South's No. 3 seed
CALGARY, ALTA, (Feb. 15, 2019) — The SAIT Trojans men's volleyball team left no doubt.
Needing just one win this weekend to secure the third seed in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division heading into the post-season, the Trojans beat the visiting Medicine Hat College Rattlers 3-1 (25-19, 33-31, 23-25, 25-19) at SAIT's Campus Centre on Friday night.
"That was one of goals this weekend, was to get that win and that No. 3 seed at home in front of our home crowd," said Trojans setter Nathan Goss (5th year, Cochrane, Alta., Business Administration). "We didn't want to leave it to playing in their gym, because that's a tough place to play."
The Trojans move to 14-9 on the season. Med Hat falls to 12-11.
Following the game, Goss was honoured for playing all five years of his post-secondary athletic career at SAIT. When asked if he was able to take in the moment, which he shared with his parents Krisa and Gord, he just smiled.
"Honestly, it's been so surreal tonight," he said. "I haven't really thought about the fact this is my last game at SAIT. I have been trying to focus on my play, and helping the team win games. It's starting to settle in a bit, but I'm sure it will hit me more later on."
The southpaw setter sure made the most of the night, dishing out a season-best 51 assists in the win.
Teammate Jarett Noel (2nd year, Calgary, Geographic Information Systems was the recipient of most of those assists, as he put away 17 kills.
KeAndre Evans led the Rattlers with 15 kills.
After this weekend, Goss will lead his team into the ACAC Conference Championship, set for Feb 21-23 and hosted by the Edmonton-based NAIT Ooks.
Last year, the Trojans won the ACAC title after going in as the favourites. Ranked No. 3 will put a different spin on things this time around.
"It'll be a little different feeling, but honestly, I think we have so much more potential – we just haven't hit it yet," Goss stated. "There's no time like the playoffs, so you can't think about things too much. You just have to do it."
