Fourth-quarter run leads SAIT past Red Deer College
CALGARY, ALTA., (Nov. 9, 2018) — A timely run put the SAIT Trojans women's basketball season on the right side of .500.
The Trojans used a 13-0 run to start the final quarter, as they beat a desperate Red Deer College Queens team looking for their first win of the season 58-50 in their Friday night Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest played inside SAIT's Campus Centre.
"The key part of that 13-0 run was the zero by them," said Trojans head coach Bir Parmar. "Obviously, we needed the points to go ahead, but our defense won us that game. That was the message we gave them at half – that we have given our defense another opportunity to shine, and it did."
The Trojans move to 3-2 on the year. Red Deer falls to 0-5.
After leading by three after the first quarter, the Trojans went ice cold from the field, shooting just 17 per cent in the second to trail 30-25 at the break.
The Trojans chipped away at the lead in the third quarter thanks to a strong effort from both Anegor Wol (1st year, Edmonton, Alta., Academic Upgrading) and Mel Thera (5th year, Winnipeg, Man., Emergency Medical Technology).
The two combined for 10 points, as the Trojans cut the lead to just three going into the final 10 minutes of play.
Wol finished the game with 17 points and five steals. Thera finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
To start the fourth, rookie Skyler MacDonald (1st year, Vancouver, BC, Business Administration) drained back-to-back threes as SAIT took the lead and never looked back.
They finished the contest outscoring the Queens 16-5 in the final quarter.
Paige Schultz led the Queens with 11 points.
The Trojans will get right back at it tomorrow night when they host the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in another 6pm start at the Campus Centre.
