Trojans fall to nationally-ranked Broncos
OLDS, ALTA., (Nov. 23, 2018) — Once again, the SAIT Trojans women's basketball team fought hard against a nationally-ranked opponent, but once again, they lost.
The Trojans scored a season-best 76 points, but it wasn't enough as they gave up 83 in an 83-76 loss to the host Olds College Broncos in their Friday night Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest. With that said, head coach Bir Parmar isn't too beat up by the result.
"We don't play for November, or even January," he said. "We're looking for success in March, but we have to make sure we get some W's here, so we ensure our spot in March. We're improving, and that's what matters."
SAIT falls to 3-5 on the season. The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association's (CCAA) sixth-ranked team improves to 7-2.
"What bit us tonight was a slow start," Parmar added. "Between the second, third and fourth quarters we win by three, but we were down 10 after the first. That hurt us."
The Trojans were led by veteran Mel Woolley (5th year, Sturgeon County, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration) and rookie Maddy Douglas (1st year, Rosemary, Alta., Nutrition for Healthy Lifestyles). Each of them scored 17 points in the loss.
Brittney Thibeaux led the Broncos with a game-high 33 points. Former Trojan Macyn Morning Bull had a big game against her ex-teammates, scoring 11 points and adding an impressive 17 rebounds.
The Trojans will wrap up their first semester next weekend when they host the Briercrest College Clippers for a pair of home games – Friday night at 6pm, Saturday afternoon at 1pm.
