Trojans downed by Clippers
CALGARY, ALTA., (Nov. 30, 2018) — The message sent to the SAIT Trojans women's basketball team following their game Friday night was simple, but direct.
The Trojans simply disappeared in the second and third quarters, as they were beat by the visiting Briercrest College Clippers 67-46 in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played inside SAIT's Campus Centre.
"I told them they better not by OK with that effort," said Trojans head coach Bir Parmar when asked about his post-game speech. "The day you become OK with getting outworked the way we did is the day your career as a competitive basketball player is over."
SAIT falls to 3-6 on the season. Briercrest improves to 3-6.
The game wasn't all bad for SAIT, who actually led 15-8 after the first quarter of play.
The next two quarters, however, saw the SAIT score a combined 15 points as they shot just 13 per cent in the second and a slightly-better 18 per cent in the third.
"Nothing fell. We would have got more points if we got points for airballs," Parmar said. "We weren't just missing, we were completely off. It was a complete lack of focus."
SAIT outscored the Clippers 16-15 in the final 10 minutes of play, but it would not be enough.
Anegor Wol (1st year, Edmonton, Alta., Academic Upgrading) led the Trojans with 11 points and six rebounds.
Briercrest's Adrianna Buck led all scorers with 17 points.
The teams will wrap their first semester of play tomorrow afternoon at SAIT at 1pm. Parmar is hoping his team comes out with a better effort going into the holiday break.
"We didn't recruit those types of players, so we're hoping this was a one-off. We'll come back tomorrow and rebound" he said.
