Trojans fall to Queens to start 2019
RED DEER, ALTA., (Jan. 11, 2019) — The SAIT Trojans women's basketball did not start off 2019 the way they would have wanted.
SAIT was beaten 55-38 by the host Red Deer College Queens in their Friday night Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest in a game where shooting woes of 2018 carried over into the new year.
"Same old, same old," said Trojans head coach Bir Parmar. "The numbers at the half just don't make any sense – we force 21 turnovers, we have twice as many shots as they do and we're down five. When it comes down to it, thank goodness we can defend, otherwise some of these games would be beyond embarrassing."
SAIT falls to 3-8 this season, while Red Deer improves to 2-9.
The first half of the season was one Parmar would like to forget, as it was filled with nights where his team could not score the ball. Unfortunately, that trend did not disappear during the holiday break.
The Trojans shot just 21.9 per cent from the field, and just 13 per cent from the three-point line.
"This is not a physical thing, this is a mental thing," Parmar added. "What we have to do is to come back and figure out that the open looks we are getting have to go in. No matter how good our defence is, we have to be able to score."
One of the few highlights on the night was the play of newcomer Rachel Osczevski (2nd year, Rocky Mountain House, Alta., Health Fundamentals). Playing in her first game as a Trojan, the 5-foot-9 post scored eight points and hauled down 11 rebounds.
"She's a workhorse," Parmar said. "I think she'll be a double-digit rebounder every game, and she does it by sheer effort. Hopefully, we have some other players feed off of that and we get going in the right direction."
The teams will finish their weekend set tomorrow night back at SAIT at 6pm.
