Trojans snap six-game skid
CALGARY, ALTA., (Jan. 12, 2019) — There was a loud sigh of relief heard at the SAIT Campus Centre Saturday night.
That was sound SAIT Trojans women's basketball head coach Bir Parmar made as his Trojans snapped a six-game losing streak following their 57-39 victory over the visiting Red Deer College Queens in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest.
"Physically, we have everything there that is necessary, but mentally we were lacking the last little while," said Parmar. "Today, we made some headway in that area. We still have some work to do, but thankfully, we haven't played our way out of a playoff spot yet."
SAIT moves to 4-8 on the season, while Red Deer falls to 2-10.
The Trojans shooting woes have been talked and written about for some time now, so coming out of the gates and shooting a considerably-better 35 per cent from the field in the first half was surprising as they took a 14-11 lead into the second quarter.
But, once SAIT saw baskets falling, that seemed to give the rest of the team confidence.
"When it comes down to it, we don't have to put up huge numbers to win games, but we do have to score a bit," Parmar said. "It was nice to see us score more than we have been doing lately."
That lead was turned to 13 points by the end of the first half when SAIT outscored the Queens 15-5 in the second quarter.
SAIT kept their foot on the gas, and extended their lead to 25 points just over a minute into the third quarter. From then on out, Parmar was able to rest his starters and give some bench players a chance to salt away the contest.
Newcomer Rachel Osczevski (2nd year, Rocky Mountain House, Alta., Health Fundamentals) had another strong game for the Trojans, scoring a team-high 17 points while adding six rebounds.
Teammate Anegor Wol (1st year, Edmonton, Alta., Academic Upgrading) added 10 points and three rebounds.
Harnett Sidhu led the Queens with eight points.
The Trojans will return to action next weekend with just one game against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Jan. 18 in Lethbridge, Alta.
