Trojans fall to seven players in loss to Lightning
CALGARY, (Jan. 31, 2019) — The SAIT Trojans women's basketball team just cannot catch a break.
The already short-staffed team fell to just seven healthy bodies on Thursday night, falling 62-47 to the visiting St. Mary's University Lightning in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played at SAIT's Campus Centre.
"The seven out there sure gave it their all tonight. I'm proud of them," said Trojans head coach Bir Parmar. "Some of them aren't used to playing big minutes like that. . . They fought until the very end."
SAIT falls to 4-12, which places them sixth in the eight-team ACAC South Division. St. Mary's improves to 11-6.
Despite the skeleton crew, SAIT was in the game for the majority of the first half – which saw veteran Hope Lewis leave the game and not return. By the time halftime came about, the Trojans were down 38-32 thanks to 11 first-half points by guard Jaiden Hansen (2nd year, Okotoks, Alta., Nutrition for Healthy Lifestyles).
The second half saw the Trojans tire, which affected their shooting. The third saw them shoot just 8 per cent from the field, and a slightly better 10 per cent in the fourth.
"Shooting poorly is something that has kind of been our thing this year," Parmar said. "Going into halftime, it wasn't a poor shooting night for us, but we stunk in the second half."
Hansen finished with a team-high 13 points, while teammate Mel Thera (5th year, Winnipeg, Man., EMT – Paramedic) added 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Emily Wagner led the Lightning with 27 points.
The teams will finish their weekend series on Friday night across town at Glenmore
