Late-game fatigue sinks Trojans
CALGARY, (Feb. 2, 2019) — The numbers game was just too much to overcome for the SAIT Trojans women's basketball team.
Employing just six bodies, the Trojans shot the ball well enough, but tired down the stretch in an 80-61 loss to the host St. Mary's University Lightning in their Saturday night Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) all-Calgary contest.
"We put ourselves in a position where we played with only six players, and we just ran out of gas," said Trojans head coach, Bir Parmar. "Between foul trouble and the minutes, we had to adjust what we were doing just so we didn't end up with five or less. . . It is what it is."
SAIT falls to 4-13 on the season. St. Mary's moves to 12-6.
Mel Thera (5th year, Winnipeg, Man., EMT – Paramedic) led the Trojans' skeleton crew with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Teammate Hope Lewis (3rd year, Courtenay, BC, Health Fundamentals) added 14 points.
"For a group like that, to be put in that position, they played hard," Parmar said about his team. "They didn't get outworked, that's for sure."
Emily Wagner paced the Lightning with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
The Trojans will look to get back in the win column next weekend when they take on the host Ambrose University Lions on Friday, Feb. 8 at 6pm.
