Foul trouble costs Trojans in OT loss
CALGARY, ALTA., (Jan. 30, 2020) - The SAIT Trojans women's basketball team will be wondering what if.
Four Trojans fouled out of the game as they fell 65-60 in overtime to the visiting Lethbridge College Kodiaks in their Thursday night Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played inside SAIT's Campus Centre.
"That was a product of our own doing," said a disappointed Trojans head coach Bir Parmar. "When it came down to it, we put ourselves in the position. The majority of those fouls were earned. Just some poor decision making tonight by us."
The loss drops SAIT's ACAC South Division record to 3-11. Lethbridge improves to 9-7.
"We had an opportunity to take a 'W', but we let ourselves down," Parmar continued.
After a slow start, the Trojans turned things around in the second quarter by outscoring the Kodiaks 19-5 to take a 30-24 lead into the break.
Leading the charge for SAIT in the quarter was forward Anegor Wol (2nd year, Edmonton, Alta., Journalism), who scored nine of her game-high 17 points in the second.
Lethbridge chipped away at the lead in the third quarter before taking the lead back in the fourth. The teams battled back and fourth before SAIT's foul trouble started to cost them.
In the overtime period, SAIT had to go to their bench, who had sat for the majority of the game. They could only watch as the Kodiaks dominated the final five minutes of play.
"No matter what, if you're wearing that uniform the expectation is the same, regardless if you're the eighth kid coming off the bench or starting the game," Parmar explained. "We lost the game, and it's a tough one to swallow."
Trojans guard Skyler MacDonald (2nd year, Vancouver, BC, Business Administration) had a solid game, adding 13 points and four assists.
Kirsten Barwegen led the Kodiaks with 16 points.
The Trojans return to the court next weekend when they take on the Red Deer College Queens in a home-and-home series - Friday night at home, Saturday night on the road.
