WBB | Shoults Named Head Coach
The SAIT Trojans Athletics and Recreation Department are pleased to announce Steve Shoults has been named the new head coach of the women’s basketball program.
Shoults joins SAIT after spending the previous nine seasons across the city with the St. Mary’s University Lightning. In his time at St. Mary’s, Shoults led the Lightning to post-season berths in all nine seasons - winning the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Basketball title in the 2017-18 season.
"I would like to express my sincere gratitude to SAIT for this opportunity. I am honored to lead the Trojans women's basketball team into the future and excited to start this journey,” Shoults said. “Building a program that not only competes at the highest level, but also enriches the lives of everyone involved is something I believe in and will set out to do from Day 1.”
Along with his ACAC title, Shoults also earned a pair of silver medals (2015-16, 2016-17) and two bronze medals (2019-20, 2021-22). In 2015-16, Shoults was named the ACAC’s Women’s Basketball South Division Coach of the Year.
The Trojans, on the other hand, have struggled in recent years, failing to reach the ACAC championship tournament in three of the last four seasons. Coincidentally, the ACAC title Shoults captured six years ago came on SAIT’s home court.
“We are very excited to welcome Steve into the Trojans family,” said Lauren Kucera, Manager of SAIT’s Athletics and Recreation Department. “He brings a wealth of ACAC experience, a proven track record and a methodical approach to winning that we are excited to see put into action. We look forward to having Steve work with our roster of new and returning players to see what they can accomplish together.”
As the semester finishes up at SAIT, each of the teams will be focusing on some “off-season” time before the coming season. ACAC basketball tips off again in October 2024.
