Trojans hope first win is the start of something big
CALGARY, ALTA., (Oct. 20, 2018) — The monkey is off the back.
The SAIT Trojans women's hockey secured their first win of the season on Friday night, beating the Olds College Broncos 3-1 in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played at SAIT Arena.
"It's so nice," said Trojans forward Karmen Mooney (4th year, Squamish, BC, Construction Project Management) when asked about the team getting their first win. "We talk all the time about our potential, and how we don't see it at times. To see it tonight was great."
SAIT moves to 1-5 on the year. Olds College falls to 2-3-1.
Falling behind in games has been a problem so far for the Trojans, who have allowed the first goal in all five of their losses.
And their win tonight? They scored the first goal, off the stick of Mooney in the opening frame.
"Getting that lead was huge for us, as we were able to build off of it," she said. "It was what we needed to get our feet going tonight, and hopefully we carry that over into next weekend."
Mooney now has four goals in six games this season. Her career high is five, which she accumulated in 24 games last year.
In the second period, the Broncos tied the game just three minutes in when Shauna Johnson beat Trojans goalie Kaylin Schellenberg (1st year, Calgary, Business Administration).
That's all Schellenberg would give up, as she turned aside 19 shots to earn her first ACAC win.
The Trojans took the lead back just over two minutes later when Kelsey Patterson netted her first ACAC goal – which turned out to be the game-winner.
Tashel Scantlebury (4th year, Fox Warren, Man., Civil Engineering Technology) added an insurance marker to salt away the win.
Following the game, a lot of screams of joy could be heard through the dressing room door.
"We're all pumped," Mooney said. "We now have two days to rest and recover before getting back at it next week. We feel we have just started our season now – it's like the TSN Turning Point."
The Trojans will return to the ice next weekend with a home-and-home set against the NAIT Ooks – Friday at NAIT, Saturday at home.
