Penalty trouble costs Trojans
CALGARY, ALTA., (Nov. 3, 2018) — The SAIT Trojans women's hockey team could not stay out of the penalty box, and it cost them dearly.
The Trojans allowed four power play goals, as they fell 5-3 to the visiting NAIT Ooks Saturday night in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played at SAIT Arena.
The Trojans fall to 1-7 on the year. NAIT jumps to 6-2.
Despite the loss, it was SAIT who wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Lexie Shumate (2nd year, St. Albert, Alta., Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant) scored just 49 seconds into the game to give her team a 1-0 lead.
NAIT tied the game nine minutes later on the power play when Verca Kuzelova fired a loose puck top corner over the shoulder of Trojans goalie Kaylin Schellenberg (1st year, Airdrie, Alta., Business Administration).
Schellenberg stopped 32 shots in the loss.
The Trojans regained their lead in the second period when Brittany MacDonald was sent in on a breakaway and beat Ooks goalie Kaitlyn Slator with 12 minutes left in the period.
NAIT then responded with three of their own – a power play goal by Tanel Boeckman, a short-handed goal by Delaney Martin and another power play goal by Jordan McMillan – to take a 4-2 lead into the final period.
In the third, NAIT's Brittney Savard scored, you guessed it, on the power play to put her team up 5-2.
MacDonald added her second of the game for SAIT to cut the lead to 5-3 with just under four minutes left, but that's as close as they would get.
The Trojans will return to the ice next weekend with a pair of games against the Red Deer College Queens – Friday at home, Saturday in Red Deer.
