Trojans fall in first test of 2019
OLDS, ALTA., (Jan. 10, 2019) — It wasn't the start to 2019 the SAIT Trojans women's hockey team wanted.
Playing in their first game back since the holiday break, the Trojans were blanked 2-0 by the host Olds College Broncos in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played in Olds, Alta.
SAIT falls to a league-worst 2-11 on the year. Olds College, who the Trojans are chasing for the fourth and final playoff berth, improve to 5-7-1.
The teams finished the first 20 minutes of play in a scoreless tie before the hosts added one in each of the final two frames to ice the win.
Bailee Werstroh scored the eventual game-winner less than seven minutes into the second period, beating Trojans netminder Kaylin Schellenberg (1st year, Airdrie, Alta., Business Administration).
Hanna Wadlegger scored into an empty net with 40 seconds remaining in the game to round out the scoring.
The Trojans fired 28 shots on net, but could not get one past Broncos netminder Lexi Bruce, who was tabbed with the shutout victory.
The teams will finish their weekend series Saturday night back at SAIT in a 7pm puck drop.
