Trojans top Queens in a shootout
RED DEER, ALTA., (Jan. 18, 2019) — Don't look now, but the SAIT Trojans women's hockey team are on a winning streak.
The Trojans scored with just 21 seconds remaining to tie the game, and then went on to win it in a shootout to beat the host Red Deer College Queens in their Friday night Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game.
Coupled with last weekend's 6-4 win over Olds College, and the struggling Trojans have won back-to-back games for the first time since Feb. 9 and 11, 2017 when they swept the Queens with identical 3-2 scores.
SAIT, who still find themselves looking up at the other four teams in the league, now sit at 4-11 - just three points back of Olds College for the fourth and final playoff spot available.
Friday's game saw little to no action for the majority of it. Both teams had chances on the power play, but could not solve the other's goaltender.
It wasn't until five minutes remaining in the third period when Red Deer broke the scoreless tie thanks to Sydnee Decorby's marker that beat SAIT goalie Elisha Oswald (3rd year, Waldersee, Man., Health Information Management).
Oswald stopped 32 other shots to earn the win.
SAIT tied the game with seconds left when Karmen Mooney (4th year, Squamish, BC., Construction Project Management) scored from in tight to send the game to overtime.
After two rounds of extra time solved nothing, the teams went to a shootout, where SAIT's Scotia Bellavance (4th year, Campbell River, BC., Business Administration) scored the winner.
The Trojans will look to continue their winning streak tomorrow when they host the Queens in a 7pm start at the Campus Centre.
