Trojans edged at home by Queens
CALGARY, ALTA., (Jan. 19, 2019) — Missed opportunities cost the SAIT Trojans women's hockey team Saturday night.
Handed multiple power play chances in the final period, the Trojans could only cash on one of them, as they fell 2-1 to the visiting Red Deer College Queens in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest played at SAIT's Campus Centre.
Following two straight wins, SAIT now falls to 4-12 on the season while the Queens jump to 6-8-2.
After a scoreless first period, the Trojans allowed a pair of second-period markers to their guests, as Mary Hirsch and Mariah McKersie each found a way to beat SAIT goalie Kaylin Schellenberg (1st year, Airdrie, Alta., Business Administration).
In the third period, SAIT had their chances when Red Deer made repeated trips to the penalty box. It wasn't until their last power play when Davina McLeod (2nd year Aklavik, NWT, Academic Upgrading) tipped in a shot from the point with 34 seconds left that SAIT finally solved Red Deer goalie Miranda Cook.
Cook made 31 saves to earn the win, while Schellenberg stopped 30 shots in a losing effort.
The Trojans will return to action next weekend with a pair of games against the MacEwan University Griffins – Friday night in Edmonton, Saturday night back in Calgary.
