Patterson nets winner in double OT
CALGARY, (Feb. 16, 2019) — The SAIT Trojans women's hockey team kept grinding and grinding, and eventually it paid off.
After being snakebit for the majority of the game, the Trojans received a late goal to tie it up, and double overtime heroics to beat the visiting Red Deer College Queens 2-1 in their Saturday afternoon Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest played at SAIT's Campus Centre.
The victory gives SAIT a 6-15 record, while the Queens fall to 10-9-5.
Despite controlling most of the play in the opening period, SAIT could not find a way to put the puck in the back of the net. Fortunately for them, neither could the Queens.
Red Deer showed more life in the second period, and used that to take the lead when Janessa Fournier beat SAIT goalie Elisha Oswald (3rd year, Waldersee, Man., Health Information Management) just over three minutes into the second period.
Oswald shut the door for the remainder of the game, making a few big saves late to keep her team in it. She finished with 38 saves.
SAIT finally as Brittany MacDonald (2nd year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) fired a shot that went off a Queens defender and past goalie Miranda Cook with less than six minutes ahead.
The teams stayed tied after 60 minutes of regulation, so overtime was needed.
First up was five minutes of four-on-four hockey, in which both teams had great chances to score, came and went, sending the teams to a second overtime period – this time three-on-three.
The eventual winner came when the Trojans won a draw in the opposing end. Patterson hopped on the loose puck and immediately fired it over the right shoulder of Cook.
The Trojans will have a short week, as they will host the MacEwan Griffins on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 4pm in a makeup game from one cancelled in late January due to the passing of Griffins men's hockey player Nakehko Lamothe.
Their final weekend series will come on the ensuing weekend when they take on the NAIT Ooks in a home-and-home series – Friday at SAIT, Saturday in Edmonton.
