Trojans fall in OT, but keep playoff hopes alive

CALGARY, (Feb. 22, 2019) — It wasn't a win, but the SAIT Trojans women's hockey team are not out of it yet.

The Trojans earned a point in a tightly-contested 4-3 overtime loss to the NAIT Ooks on Friday night at SAIT's Campus Centre to sit just two points back of the fourth and final Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) playoff spot.

An outright loss would have officially eliminated them from post-season contention, and the Trojans knew it.

In the opening frame, the teams combined for four goals, with NAIT taking the lead and then giving it back twice.

First it was Ooks forward Brittney Savard, who beat SAIT goalie Elisha Oswald (3^rd year, Waldersee, Man., Health Information Management).

The Trojans tied it up on the first of two goals by Davina McLeod (2^nd year, Aklavik, NWT, Academic Upgrading) just under two minutes later.

NAIT went up again later in the period when Rebecca Roszell scored, but SAIT tied it up again 80 seconds later when McKenzie Meek (2^nd year, Brandon, Man., Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant) intercepted a pass and went in all alone and beat the Ooks goalie with a backhand.

After a scoreless second period, McLeod's second of the game gave the Trojans their first lead with 12 minutes left in the game.

However, NAIT found a way to even the score again when Carlin Boey scored on the power play with six minutes remaining.

In overtime, NAIT's Kylin Ziemmer finished things off by racing down the wing and beating Oswald short side.

The teams will wrap up their respective regular season's Saturday night back at NAIT.
