Trojans edged by Ooks in Saturday night affair
EDMONTON, ALTA., (Jan. 11, 2020) - The SAIT Trojans women's hockey team scored first, but that's where the good news ended for them.
The Trojans fell Saturday night, losing to the host NAIT Ooks 2-1 in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) action played in the province's capital.
The loss sends SAIT's record 2-11-1. NAIT moves to 9-4-1.
After being shutout 3-0 on Friday, SAIT opened the scoring 10 minutes into Saturday contest when Karmen Mooney (5th year, Squamish, BC, Construction Project Management) scored on an odd play.
A loose puck trickled down the ice towards NAIT goalie Kaitlyn Slator. Mooney raced her to the puck, and collided with the Ooks goalie. In the chaos that followed the puck ended up back on the stick of Mooney, who put it in the open net as Slator remained on the ice.
The Trojans took the lead into the second period, but it didn't last long.
Just 83 seconds into the middle frame, the Ooks tied the game off the stick when Bre Martin beat SAIT goalie Kaylin Schellenberg (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration).
Ten minutes later, NAIT took the lead for good when Livia Lucova scored.
That would be it for goals, as Schellenberg and Slator shut the door the rest of the way.
SAIT returns to the ice next week with a pair of games against the Olds College Broncos - Thursday in Olds, Friday night at SAIT.
