Trojans edged by Griffins
EDMONTON, ALTA., (Jan. 31, 2020) - The SAIT Trojans women's hockey team dropped a close one Friday night.
The Trojans battled hard all game, but gave up a goal with less than seven minutes in the final period to fall 2-1 to the host MacEwan University Griffins in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) action played in Edmonton.
SAIT falls to 4-12-1 in the standings. The first-place Griffins move to 16-3.
A win would have been ideal for the Trojans, as they now find themselves on the outside of the playoff picture looking in. The good news is they have three games in-hand over the fourth place Olds College Broncos, who sit just two points ahead of them in the standings.
After falling behind 1-0 with just over eight minutes remaining in the opening period thanks to a goal from MacEwan's Jill MacWilliam, the Trojans tied the game with just eight seconds remaining on a marker by Kelsey Patterson (2nd year, Castlegar, BC, Civil Engineering Technology).
The game stayed that way until the 13:30 mark of the third period when Griffins forward Amanda Murray beat SAIT goalie Kaylin Schellenberg (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration) for the game-winner.
Schellenberg had a solid game in net for the Trojans, stopping 36 shots.
The Trojans will get a chance to even the weekend series Saturday night at home in a 7pm puck drop.
