Trojans get two from Schneider in win over Kodiaks
CALGARY, ALTA., (Sept. 30, 2018) — The SAIT Trojans women's soccer team were in unfamiliar territory on Sunday, but navigated their way through it to earn the win.
The Trojans allowed their first goal of the year, but responded with four unanswered of their own to beat the visiting Lethbridge College Kodiaks 4-1 in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played in Calgary.
"One of the things I liked about today is that after they scored, we didn't sit there and point fingers or panic," said Trojans head coach John Talerico. "I told them at halftime that their goal came about as a result of a collective mistake by our team, not just one person. We learned from it and moved on."
SAIT moves to 7-0 on the year. Lethbridge College moves to 3-3-1.
After going six games without allowing a single goal, the Trojans gave up the first goal of the game when Kodiaks forward Jasmin Salmon scored to put the visiting team up 1-0.
"(Lethbridge) is a good, young team and they're pushing everyone. It was a good game," Talerico added.
The Trojans did not wait long to respond as Autumn Schneider (2nd year, Calgary, Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant) scored the first of her two goals on the day to tie the game.
Her second of the game came in the 43rd minute to give her team the lead going into the half.
"On Saturday, Autumn could have had three or four, but today she was able to bury those same chances," laughed Talerico. "It was nice to see her bounce back from a frustrating day."
Following the break, the ball stayed in the middle of the field, with neither team gaining many scoring opportunities.
Cheyanne Holland (2nd year, Victoria, BC, Electrician) scored in the 75th minute to give SAIT an insurance marker before teammate Mataya Blakney (5th year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) scored her tenth of the season to ice the win.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Trojans this week, as they play a rare Wednesday night game against the host Ambrose University Lions at 6pm. Following that, they will play on Saturday afternoon at Olds College in a game that starts at noon.
"We'll rest for one day, I guess, and then get back at it on Tuesday," Talerico stated. "It's tough, but we're all playing the same amount of games, in the same cold weather – it's all good."
