Late goals give the Trojans the edge over the Rustlers
LLOYDMINSTER, ALTA., (Oct. 14, 2018) — Patience was a virtue for the SAIT Trojans women's soccer team, Sunday afternoon.
The Trojans scored in both the 84th and 85th minute of play as they defeated the host Lakeland College Rustlers 2-0 in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played in Lloydminster, Alta.
"We started out nervous, despite owning most of the possession and shots on net, which was weird," said Trojans head coach, John Talerico. "The second half was a different story. We composed ourselves more and kept working at it until we finally got the break we needed."
The victory moves SAIT's ACAC South Division record to 9-0, while the Rustlers fall to 1-8-1.
After controlling play for the majority of the game, it would be Maddie Lee (5th year, Lethbridge, Alta, Architectural Technologies) who broke the scoreless tie with her 10th goal of the season.
Rachelle LaBranche (2nd year, Canmore, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration) scored a minute later to cement the win.
This coming week will be an interesting one, as the Trojans will play two, possibly three, games.
The Trojans will play Ambrose University Tuesday night at 6pm at Rundle College in a game that was postponed two weeks ago due to weather.
Friday afternoon is being discussed as a possibility for SAIT and Olds College to play their game that was postponed on Oct. 6, but that has yet to be confirmed.
Finally, on Saturday, the Trojans and Ambrose meet again in SAIT's final game of the regular season at Cohos Commons Field in a noon start.
Instead of worrying about the amount of games possibly played in a short period of time, Talerico says his team has talked about how they can use it to their advantage.
"Yeah, it's going to be grueling, but at the same time, it's going to mimic having to play on consecutive days at the Conference Championship and at Nationals should we get there," he explained. "Getting that many games in will be good in the sense that it will keep us sharp. We feel comfortable about it."
