Trojans top Lions in nighttime affair
CALGARY, ALTA., (Oct. 16, 2018) — The SAIT Trojans women's soccer team shone under the lights Tuesday night.
A goal in each of the halves gave the Trojans a 2-0 win over the Ambrose University Lions in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) night game played at Rundle College in southwest Calgary.
"We moved the ball around a lot; we did a good job that way," said Trojans head coach, John Talerico. "Our final execution let us down at times, but we were able to keep possession of the ball quite a bit."
The win keeps SAIT's record intact at an impressive 10-0. Ambrose, playing in their first year in the ACAC, falls to 3-6-1.
Mataya Blakney (5th year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) scored the game-winning goal late in the first half. Sage Meyers (1st year, Cochrane, Alta. Mechanical Engineering Technology) added the insurance marker in the 80th minute.
The odd Tuesday night contest came about as a result of a game between the two teams that was postponed two weeks ago due to inclement weather.
Because of it, the teams will meet again for the second of their season series on Saturday afternoon at SAIT in the final game of the regular season for each game.
Before that happens, SAIT will play in yet another makeup game — this one against Olds College on Friday afternoon in a game set to be played Lacombe, Alta.
"I think we need to sharpen up – especially in the attacking third. We're going to work on a couple of things this week that we need to clean up as we head into the Conference Championship later this month," Talerico stated. "We also need a little better movement off the ball, so we'll focus on those things in the next few days."
