Trojans win in rare Friday afternoon affair
LACOMBE, ALTA., (Oct. 19, 2018) — Home. Away. Neutral territory. It doesn't matter to the SAIT Trojans women's soccer team.
Playing in Lacombe, Alta., the Trojans controlled the game from whistle to whistle as they beat the Olds College Broncos 3-0 in an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) makeup game that was postponed a few weeks back due to inclement weather.
"It was a great team effort," said Trojans head coach John Talerico, whose bench was shortened by the absence of key players. "But overall, it's what I am calling a feel-good win because it showed us the depth that we have. We had players playing in spots they are not accustom to, but we felt positive about it from start to finish."
SAIT moves to 11-0 this season. Olds College falls to 4-6-1 and is officially eliminated from playoff contention.
Jamie McPherson (1st year, Fort St. John, BC, Nutrition for Healthy Lifestyles) scored SAIT's first, and game-winning, goal in the opening half.
In the second half Sage Meyers (1st year, Cochrane, Alta., Mechanical Engineering Technology) and Mataya Blakney (5th year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) added insurance markers to cement the win.
The Trojans wrap up their regular season tomorrow afternoon at home when they host the Ambrose University Lightning.
Following that, the Trojans will focus on winning an ACAC title at home when they welcome the league to SAIT's Cohos Commons Oct. 26-28.
"We have to get our heads in the proper spot, and make sure we aren't playing sloppy like I felt we did the past two games," Talerico said when asked about what he is hoping his team takes away from this weekend. "We definitely did that today, and tomorrow we'll continue that on."
