Trojans score often in win over Rustlers
CALGARY, ALTA. (Sept. 15, 2018) - The SAIT Trojans women’s soccer team defeated the Lakeland College Rustlers 12-0 on Saturday afternoon at the SAIT Cohos Commons Field.
The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) afternoon tilt in Calgary featured a pair of four-goal performances by Mataya Blakney (5th year, Calgary, Business Administration) and Maddie Lee (5th year, Lethbridge, Alta., Architectural Technologies). Skye Gordon (2nd year, Langley, BC, Business Administration) added two goals, while Deanna Kuan (3rd year, Edmonton, Business Administration) and Taylor Zimmer (2nd year, Nelson, BC, Bachelor of Business Administration) added one each.
“We really moved the ball around well as a team both defensively and offensively," said Blakney. "The start of the game was quite slower than we are used to because it was cold, but we just needed to be composed and wait for it to happen."
SAIT moves to 3-0 with the victory, while Lakeland College falls to 0-2.
Trojans head coach John Talerico said he was happy with how his team performed. They opened with four goals in the opening 45 minutes of play, and added twice that amount in the second half.
Lee's four goals now give her seven for the season in just three games.
“Bringing in a person like Maddie who has a lot of USports experience adds a lot to the team. Four goals for her, she makes the simple things happen and it rubs off," he said.
Despite starting 3-0, Talerico is not about to start planning a parade.
“I’m still cautious because it’s not how you start it’s how you finish. Last year we had a good regular season, but we didn't go as far as we would have liked in the playoffs,” said Talerico. “So for us right now we just have to keep up the work and keep it simple.”
Blakney was named Player of the Game for the Trojans. Gabrielle Lapointe got the call for the Rustlers.
The Trojans next matchup will come at home on Sunday against the Red Deer College Queens. Kickoff is set for noon.
