Trojans finish fourth at ACAC Championship
EDMONTON, ALTA., (Oct. 27, 2019) - The SAIT Trojans women's soccer team will not be able to make it back-to-back years with a medal.
The Trojans were beaten 1-0 by the Lethbridge College Kodiaks Sunday morning, as the teams battled for the bronze medal at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women's Soccer Championship, hosted by NAIT.
"It could have went either way," said Trojans head coach John Talerico. "We didn't get a medal, but we're excited about how tight of a group we have become and are looking forward to next season."
The only goal of the game came early in the contest when Lethbridge's Dairy Holmes headed in a cross past Trojans goalkeeper Amy Offredi (4th year, Calgary, Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant).
"It was a beautiful goal," Talerico admitted. "(Holmes) did well to get a piece of it."
SAIT's best chance came with about 15 minutes left when rookie Kenzie Georgsen (1st year, Chestermere, Alta., Architectural Technologies) fired a shot on net that hit the crossbar and bounced back out into play.
While finishing out of the medals was not the result they wanted, it's important to remember that barely over a month ago, the Trojans sat in second last place in the six-team South Division.
They rallied back to finish second in the South heading into the Conference Championship thanks to a five-game winning streak to end the regular season.
"It was great to see us fight til the bitter end, just pushing and putting everything into it. There was no holding back," Talerico said proudly. "The ladies did fantastic, and had their chances, but it just seemed like it wasn't meant to be. This group, they amaze me all the time, but they showed true character. Not only this weekend, but throughout the season."
