CAMROSE, ALTA., (Oct. 13, 2018) — The SAIT Trojans men and women's cross-country teams both battled hard in the season's fifth and final Grand Prix event Saturday afternoon.
Co-head coach Bre MacEachern said both teams did well today at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) event, hosted by the University of Alberta-Augustana in Camrose, Alta.
"Everyone had a pretty good run today. It was pretty tough conditions; a bit snowy and cold on the trails, but we were happy," said MacEachern.
Despite not ideal conditions, the men's team came out on top with a first-place finish and the women finished in fourth place.
The women tied for third place but due to lost out on a tiebreaker to actually end up fourth.
"We just need to set a couple goals for provincials and then try to get that third-place finish so we can take the girls to nationals," said MacEachern.
Matthew Travaglini (4th year, London, Ont., Geographic Information Systems) finished first in the men's 8-kilometre race for the Trojans with a time of 25:48.
The impressive run put him a full minute ahead of the second-place finisher.
"He is always a big standout and he was able to pull out the win overall," said MacEachern.
SAIT's women's side was led by Emilie Mann (2nd year, Fernie, BC, Respiratory Therapy) with a time of 24:06 to finish in second place in the 6km event.
With the ACAC Championships coming up on Oct. 27, the men's team is looking for their third ACAC Championship win in a row. The women's team will be looking for a top three finish to qualify for nationals.
