Chambers, Conner lead Trojans past Kings
RED DEER, ALTA., (Oct. 25, 2019) - The SAIT Trojans men's basketball team won on the road Friday night.
Calvin Chambers scored 21 points and Charlie Conner recorded a triple-double, as the Trojans beat the host Red Deer College Kings 93-82 in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest.
"I'm very excited about tonight's win," said Trojans head coach Marty Birky. "Go into Red Deer's gym and beat a very talented and mature team. We had key players struggle tonight, but in their place, other guys stepped up and got the job done."
SAIT improves to 2-0 on the season. Red Deer falls to 1-1.
Chambers (4th year, Memphis, Tenn., Business Administration) scored 12 of his 21 points in the first half to keep SAIT ahead early on.
"Calvin's such a smart player. He's the kind of guy who has a great game, but it doesn't show up on the scoresheet," Birky stated. "He's adapting to the squad, and it was nice to see him be more aggressive today."
Conner (3rd year, Lacey, Wash., Business Administration) started slow in the game, but found other ways to contribute. He finished the contest with 10 points, 10 assists and 16 rebounds.
"He couldn't have started any worse," Birky joked. "I was worried early, but he found his groove. It just shows that he knows what it takes to win ballgames."
The Trojans return to action next Friday night when they host Ambrose University at the Campus Centre in an 8pm start.
