Trojans claw back to earn point against Thunder
EDMONTON, ALTA., (Oct. 26, 2019) - After being down three goals in the third period, the SAIT Trojans men's hockey team has to be feeling pretty good for coming away with a point.
The Trojans scored three unanswered goals late, as they came back to earn a 5-5 draw with the host Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder in their Saturday night Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest.
"We don't like to put ourselves in that position obviously, but again we're talking about our team's resiliency," said Trojans head coach Tyler Drader. "We dug ourselves a hole, but were able to climb our way out of it, and that's what you like to see from your team from time to time."
SAIT moves to 2-1-1-2 on the year. Concordia falls to 2-2-1-1.
Going to overtime has become somewhat of a habit for the Trojans, who have now done it in five of their six games of the season. In those games, they are 2-1-2.
"We have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot," Drader explained. "Tonight we had a bad change that led to a goal, unnecessary turnovers with no pressure, the little things."
Scoring for SAIT on the night was Mark Drohan (1st year, Calgary, Academic Upgrading), Rock Ruschkowski (2nd year, Calgary, Respiratory Therapy), Tyler Maltby (2nd year, Sherwood Park, Alta., Business Administration), Jackson McKinstry (3rd year, Calgary, Business Administration) and Jared Power (1st year, Calgary, Business Administration).
Power's game-tying goal came with just 17 seconds left in the contest. It was his third goal of the weekend, as he scored twice in Friday's 3-2 overtime win - including the game-winner.
Replying for Concordia was Connor Manegre, Adam Mohgrabi (2), Patrick Carlin and Keegan Tiringer.
SAIT will look for regulation wins next weekend when they head to Lac La Biche, Alta., to take on the host Portage College Voyageurs for two games - Friday night at 7pm and Saturday afternoon at 2pm.
