McCarthy leads Trojans to win over Voyageurs
LAC LA BICHE, ALTA., (Nov. 1, 2019) - The good news is the SAIT Trojans men's hockey team did not go to overtime once again Friday night. The even better news is they picked up the win in the process.
Captain Colton McCarthy (4th year, Salmon Arm, BC, Geographic Information Systems) scored twice and Kyle Dumba (1st year, Calgary, Business Administration) posted his first career Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) shutout, as their Trojans beat the host Portage College Voyageurs 3-0.
"I thought we controlled the puck pretty well. I thought our breakout was pretty clean," said Trojans head coach Tyler Drader, whose team had gone to overtime in five of their first six games this season. "We had lots of chances on a goalie who played very well tonight. I thought we were pretty good."
SAIT sees their ACAC record bump to 3-1-1-2 on the season, which gives them nine points and sits them in third place in the standings following Friday's action. Portage College remains winless at 0-6-1.
The Trojans scored once in each of the periods, getting one in the first from rookie blueliner Mark Drohan (1st year, Calgary, Academic Upgrading). McCarthy added one in the second before cementing the win with an empty net goal with just 31 seconds left in the third.
Dumba stopped all 25 shots fired his way to lock down the shutout.
There will not be a lot of time to celebrate the win, as the teams will wrap up their weekend series at 2pm on Saturday afternoon.
"We'll make sure we get a good cool down tonight before getting a good night's sleep," Drader said about the quick turnaround. "Hopefully, we'll find another way to pull out another two points."
