Trojans score nine in sweep-clinching win over Voyageurs
LAC LA BICHE, ALTA., (Nov. 2, 2019) — The long bus trip home after a road trip feels a heck of a lot shorter with four points in your pocket.
The Trojans scored four times in the opening period on their way to a 9-4 victory over the host Portage College Voyageurs in their Saturday afternoon Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) matchup played in Lac La Biche, Alta.
On Friday, SAIT beat Portage 3-0 to give them all four points available from the weekend.
"It's our first four-point weekend, so the guys are excited about that," said Trojans head coach Tyler Drader. "Scoring on our first shift today really helped get us going. We still have some stuff to work on in our D zone and with our penalty kill, but we're happy with the results this weekend."
SAIT will leave town with a 4-1-1-2 record. Portage falls to 0-7-1.
The nine goals are the most scored in one game by the Trojans since they netted nearly a dozen in an 11-1 victory at home over the Voyageurs on Feb. 23, 2018.
Those nine goals also meant a lot of Trojans hit the scoresheet, including rookie Dylan Williamson (1st year, Calgary, Business Administration) who recorded three points in Saturday's win with a goal and two assists.
"It's always good when a bunch of guys hit the scoresheet," Drader said. "I know the points will be good for Willie's confidence going forward."
Parker Evans-Campbell (4th year, High River, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration) also had three points with a pair of goals and an assist.
Also scoring for SAIT was Jackson McKinstry (3rd year, Calgary, Business Administration), Jared Power (1st year, Calgary, Business Administration), Slater Ransom (2nd year, Cochrane, Alta., Construction Project Management), Eric Krienke (3rd year, Calgary, Business Administration), Rock Ruschkowski (2nd year, Calgary, Respiratory Therapy and Zach McNeill (3rd year, Calgary, Business Administration).
The Voyageurs responded with a pair of goals by Logan Nachtegaele and solo markers from Brayden Dale and Jordan Picard.
SAIT goalie Kyle Dumba (1st year, Calgary, Business Administration) picked up his second win in as many days, stopping 23 of 27 shots fired his way.
The Trojans will have a bye next weekend before returning to ACAC play on Nov. 15 and 16 against the MacEwan University Griffins.
"There are still times where we get a little loose and start running around, and those are things we're going to address in the next two weeks before we take on MacEwan," Drader finished.
