Trojans run out of steam against Clippers
CALGARY, ALTA., (Nov. 15, 2019) - The SAIT Trojans women's basketball team put in a much better performance Friday night, but could not turn that into a win.
Despite a great start, the Trojans fell to 1-5 in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division after falling 75-58 to the visiting Briercrest College Clippers at SAIT Gymnasium.
"Too many mistakes early; it's the same thing we have done in other games where we have dug ourselves a hole," said Trojans head coach Bir Parmar. "Turnovers, missed free throws - those little things we have to be better at. Until we are, our results aren't going to be there."
The game started well for the Trojans because of some long-distance shooting by rookie guard Sirache Ubaldo (1st year, Calgary, Nutrition for Healthy Lifestyles). She connected twice from behind the three-point line, as her Trojans held a 16-15 lead after the first quarter ended.
From there, the Clippers, ranked No. 6 in Canada by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) took over. In the final three quarters, Briercrest outscored their hosts 60-42.
After shooting nearly 39 per cent from the field in the first quarter, the Trojans shot just 13 per cent in the fourth.
"We did see some growth tonight, which was a bonus, but we ran out of gas," Parmar stated. "Hopefully we gain some confidence from the good things we did in this game."
Lauren Bailey (4th year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) led the Trojans with 18 points, while Kendal Russell (2nd year, Strathmore, Alta., Academic Upgrading) added 14 points.
Amber Tilcox led the Clippers with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
The Trojans will return to action this coming week with a rare Thursday night game at Ambrose University. Game time is set for 6pm.
