Trojans can't close out sweep of Broncos
CALGARY, ALTA., (Nov. 9, 2019) - Maybe the SAIT Trojans women's hockey team wanted it too bad.
Looking to capitalize on their first win of the season, the Trojans failed in their attempt to sweep the Olds College Broncos - losing 3-1 to the visitors Saturday night in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played at SAIT Arena.
"You don't always win the games you should, and you don't always lose the games you should," said Trojans head coach Tom Molloy. "This is a 3-2 league, so you have to be able to score more than once to win games. We didn't do that tonight despite outshooting them."
SAIT falls to 1-7 on the season, while Olds improves to that same mark.
"We have a good team chemistry, but we need to work on good habits," Molloy added. "Our players come from all over, and some of them have some habits that we would like to try correct, because when the pressure is on late, we need to be able to make good decisions happen just like that. If you have bad habits, you'll resort to bad habits."
The game started out OK for the Trojans, as they took a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the contest when Brynn Ferguson (1st year, Regina, Sask., Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant) scored her second goal in as many games.
In the following period, Olds would strike twice, as Abby Webster and Kali Cummings each beat SAIT goalie Cassidy Brown (1st year, Calgary, Health Fundamentals).
In the final period, and with their net empty for an extra attacker, the Trojans could only watch as Nerissa Cardinal sealed the win for the Broncos.
The Trojans will have a bye this coming weekend, but will return to the ice on Nov. 22 and 23 against the MacEwan University Griffins.
"We have to get used to playing the game the right way," Molloy said. "We're close, but we still have work to do, and that's what we'll work on going forward."
