Patterson scores twice as Trojans edge Broncos
OLDS, ALTA., (Jan. 16, 2020) - A second-period surge aided the SAIT Trojans women's hockey team on Thursday night.
The Trojans received all four of their goals in the middle frame, as they held on for a 4-3 victory over the host Olds College Broncos in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played in Olds, Alta.
SAIT moves to 3-11-1 on the season, and sit just one point back of Olds College (3-10-2) for fourth place in the ACAC standings.
Olds started the scoring early in the first period on a goal by Bree Edwards, and added another midway through the frame from Karli Frederick to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The second period, which seemed to be the team's achilles heel in the first semester, was anything but on Thursday night.
SAIT cut into the lead less than two minutes into the second period when Kelsey Patterson (2nd year, Castlegar, BC, Civil Engineering Technology) scored her fourth of the season.
Rookie Brynn Ferguson (1st year, Regina, Sask, Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant) then beat the Olds keeper just over two minutes later to tie the game at 2-2.
Patterson piled on with her second of the game, as her Trojans took their first lead of the game less than eight minutes into the period.
Karmen Mooney (5th year, Squamish, BC, Construction Project Management) doubled the Trojans' lead on the power play when a loose puck found its way to her stick, and she deposited it into the net for the game-winner.
The Broncos pushed hard in the third period, and cut the lead to one when Brekell Otto scored with the man-advantage, but that is as close as the hosts would get.
The teams will wrap up their weekend set Friday night at SAIT. Puck drop is set for 7pm.
